HAZOP

Safety Guidelines

Safety is a vital key in any industrial process. It is important when we deal with chemicals and reactors, as identifying all the potential hazards can prevent minor accidents or even major ones such as death. Workers operating at huge machineries should be assured of their safety, not with words but with actions taken by the ones designing the plant.Equipments as well has to be taken care of, as minor mistakes can cause huge loss to the organization, and can spoil its reputation as well. High temperature and pressure are usually the main reasons of hazards, from minor burns to explosions. A safety protocol is important in case of any emergency which cannot be handled easily.

A fermenter for dry anaerobic technology uses temperature ranging from 10 °C right up to 200 °C. The process we chose needs an optimum temperature of 50-60°C . If this temperature drops from this optimum value, the production of biogas may be lower than expected. On the other hand, if the temperature rises too much above this optimum value, the product (fertilizer) may be burnt, and can also cause injuries to workers outside the fermenter as a result of too much heat.  Pressure also plays a huge role here. Too much pressure will result in explosion of storage vessel of biogas, whereas too little pressure will cause biogas to liquidize, making the production of biogas lower than expected. The flow rate also is involved in this, as too much flow will cause the fermenter to be overloaded, and too little will not use the fermenter to its maximum capacity.

There are chances of injuring workers and equipments in any process. It is important to know how to handle the problems related to the fermenter of dry anaerobic process. The storage of bio-gas should be placed at a safe distance, incase anything unexpected happens. Almost every process related to temperature and pressure  deals with fire hazards, and with fire hazard explosion is always a possibility. With all the hazards identified, we can take measures before-hand to ensure no serious threats takes the upper hand.
